What skills and experience we're looking for

The Apprentice teacher programme is designed to provide suitably qualified colleagues with a training year that is hands on and practical, provides a superb springboard into the profession, and where you will very quickly feel very part of the King’s School family.

Your school-based programme will be delivered in partnership with Teach East, our local and well-regarded teacher training provider. You will benefit from high quality centralised support, joining a supportive network of other trainees from within the Peterborough area. Within the school you be allocated a subject mentor and given plenty of support from our Professional tutor team as you start the journey towards being an outstanding teacher.

Our numbers studying Sciences at A level are strong and growing. We benefit greatly from students who are well behaved and mature; they are aspirational in their aims, and many continue to study the subject at university and beyond.

Teachers really enjoy working at the school. They find our students focused, friendly and enthusiastic, and our parents supportive. Colleagues often stay at the school for a significant period of time and find it hard to leave!

This post is both suitable for a recent graduate or those interested in a career change. All trainees would receive high quality mentoring and support.

What the school offers its staff

Thank you for your interest in joining The King’s (The Cathedral) School. It is an exciting time to be considering teacher training, especially to teach a subject which is of such importance.

The King’s (The Cathedral) School enjoys a very strong reputation both within the city and the local region. As one of a small number of state schools with close links to their local Cathedral, our distinct Christian culture lies at the heart of the School. We are a single academy Trust, located close to the city centre of Peterborough, educating students from the age of seven to eighteen.

We are rightly proud of our student’s academic achievements (progress is typically in the top 5% nationally for GCSE) but the educational philosophy at the School is far broader with students encouraged to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Sport, Music and Duke of Edinburgh.

You will benefit from training within a team where Science is enjoyed through to A-Level in strong numbers, and a good proportion of our students follow the Separate Science route at GCSE. You will join us at a perfect time where we have invested significantly into our IT provision. This year alone we have installed a brand-new network, provided laptops for all our teachers and installed new SMART boards in every classroom. We are a Microsoft School and students are becoming increasingly used to the suite of products.

For more information about the breadth of our offering and the School culture, we encourage you to read our Executive Self Evaluation Summary available on our website.

Commitment to safeguarding

The King’s (The Cathedral) School fully recognises the responsibility it has under section 175 of the Education
Act 2002 (as amended), the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 (as amended) and Education
and Training (Welfare of Children) Act, 2021 to have arrangements in place to safeguard and promote the
welfare of children.
