About the Design Technology department

The Design Technology department is currently made up of 2 teachers; one is the Deputy Principle for Behaviour and the other is a teacher of Technology. There is also a Department Lead, who specialises in Food and oversees both subjects as well as ICT.   All teachers within the department are very committed and are part of the wider Creative, Technical and Wellbeing Faculty. We are also very lucky to have 2 technicians within the team who support in lessons.

At KS3 students are on rotation of Design Technology, Food, Music and ICT.

• In Y7 students design for self and others, using a range of techniques and strategies. Students explore the properties of materials to develop prototypes. Working within and meeting constraints. Students are required to identify and analyse the function of materials and environmental impact of simple products. Students analyse products that take advantage of notable properties and explore common materials.

• In Y8 students design for others (through User Centred Design), and to meet design criteria. Applying a wider range of design techniques and selecting appropriate techniques to match a design need. Students build on their understanding of material properties. Students explore extreme materials with significance, looking at their lifecycle and functionality.

• In Y9 student design for demographic groups or users with extreme or exceptional needs. Select & justify tools and materials to make with an appreciation of Quality Control, tolerances, and finish. They reflect on the relationship between the design process employed, necessary compromised that were made and outcomes, and suggest improvements.

• At KS4 students follow the GCSE Design and Technology GCSE AQA spec which involves building on practical skills and theory knowledge throughout year 10 and following the NEA assignment brief at the end of year 10 into year 11 before completing intense theory and exam lessons and mock papers in preparation for their written paper in summer.

• The Design Technology department has a large uptake at KS4 and our intent is to grow the subject further. After school intervention is a key aspect within the team and all subjects run at least one session per week as well as a KS3 club.
