What skills and experience we're looking for

Are you looking to work with a team of teachers who consistently deliver exceptional results whilst providing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to explore Geography through field trips locally and internationally?

Humanities is a highly valued subject at the College with the talented team consistently achieving outstanding outcomes in Geography, History and Religious Studies. Progression rates through to GCSE and A level are very strong. Alongside high academic standards, the team have a strong commitment to providing extracurricular opportunities for students offering a wide range of trips, visits and competitions. Examples from recent years include a Year 12 trip to Sicily, a Year 9 battlefields trip to Belgium, a cross-curricular trip to Krakow for Year 12 and 13 students, which included visiting Auschwitz, and a Year 8 trip to the Norfolk coast. You will be joining an experienced team who have high expectations of themselves and the students they teach.

In Years 7 and 8 colleagues may be asked to teach across all subjects within Humanities. At GCSE and A level, Geography is a popular and well-regarded subject and there are clearly planned curriculums in place to support new staff on arrival.

We offer suitably qualified candidates the opportunity to teach A level Geography through our partner school Harington, which is one of the highest performing sixth forms in the country.

There are outstanding facilities throughout the College offering excellent teaching resources and access to numerous iPads, laptops and computers. Catmose College and Harington School are part of the Rutland and District Schools’ Federation, both of which have been graded outstanding by Ofsted.

  • A broad range of opportunities to engage in extracurricular trips and activities.
  • A subsidised restaurant, refectory and orangery.
  • Complimentary lunch on staff training days.

Catmose College is an oversubscribed secondary academy school on Huntsmans Drive in Oakham, Rutland. The majority of students are drawn from the county town of Oakham and surrounding villages, although many are attracted from a wider area including Leicestershire and Melton through parental choice.

The College is one of the highest achieving in Rutland and Leicestershire. Our Ofsted report in February 2012 rated the College ‘Outstanding’ in all categories. We offer a broad range of experiences beyond the classroom to build independence, resilience and leadership skills that are critical for success in adult life.

We believe in the traditional values of education; that students do best when they are happy, behave well and are engaged in purposeful activity. Our approach blends high expectations with innovative practice to ensure that all students are able to achieve their potential. The College is about much more than just academic success, our ethos is one that embraces the whole person, not just what they accomplish in lessons but everything else that ensures they are ready for the challenges of the adult world. For example, students partake weekly in the ever-popular Electives programme, where lessons finish early to allow time for students to participate in a vast array of over 90 activities and learning, from Caribbean Cooking to Cricket, and Pottery Throw Down to Trampolining.

Students also benefit from an extremely wide array of trips and visits; in previous years these have included a performing arts trip to Liverpool, a photography trip to Iceland, cultural visits to Italy and Spain, a German exchange, a visit to the WWI battlefields and much more.

We pride ourselves on offering a bespoke approach to students’ needs, whether they are more able or need some extra support. Music, Sport and Academic Scholarships are awarded annually to students who can demonstrate excellent ability in their chosen area. The scholarships are designed to recognise exceptional talent and to provide the facilities, resources and staffing to allow high-ability students to achieve their potential.

When making decisions at the College, our guiding principle is simple, ‘Would it be good enough for our own children?’ By ensuring that the standards of everything we do meets this benchmark, we ensure that the quality of services we offer are exceptional.
