What skills and experience we're looking for
An honours degree
A teaching qualification together with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Experience of teaching, learning and assessment to at least KS3/4, preferably KS5
A good understanding of curriculum developments
Able to use a range of teaching and learning strategies
Commitment to high standards in all aspects of the academy’s work
An understanding of how Assessment for Learning can improve student performance and how to embed this within your department
Confidence in the use of standard computer packages and how these can be used to enhance student learning
Able to use student level data to raise standardsü
Enthusiasm for your subject
Creative problem solving together with willingness to take on and develop and try new approaches and ideas
Ability to relate to students in a pleasant and sympathetic manner and to recognise potential safeguarding issues
Able to communicate both orally and in writing to students and their parents
Pleasant and friendly manner
Polite and punctual
Reliable
A commitment to working as part of the whole Academy team and supporting the vision and aims of the Academy

The Maths department at Thorp Academy consistently helps Year 11 students to produce outstanding results. Maths results have been significantly above national average for the last 7 years and are one of the highest performing Maths departments at Northern Education Trust and across Gateshead. On top of supporting pupils to pass exams, the Maths department excels in teaching our highest ability pupils. In 2025 7% of the Year 11 cohort achieved a Grade 9 and 70% of Year 13 students achieved a Grade A or A*.
At Thorp Academy, members of the Maths department provide formal, high quality mentoring to ECTs, and mathematical pedagogy is at the heart of discussions in staff training. Staff at Thorp teach across the age and ability range with 5 staff teaching 6th form and 10 staff teach Year 11. The Maths department are passionate about professional development and access to weekly high quality CPD from school leaders, and subject directors, as well as courses led by the NET Staff College, local Maths Hubs and the AMSP.
