Teaching Assistant - RIGGS job summary

The Role: Our Riggs Unit is a resourced provision for children with social communication difficulties. All children in the unit have Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) in place with Autism as their primary need. The children spend time both in Riggs and in mainstream classes as we believe all children have their own unique role to play in our rich, diverse and inclusive school population.
We strive to ensure that through careful and targeted support children will be able to access both academic and social opportunities with increasing independence. We will offer a safe and nurturing environment in which children can take ‘risks’ and practise skills in readiness for engagement in the wider social community.
The Person: The Riggs Unit can be a challenging environment to work in, so we’re looking to appoint someone special. You should have experience working with children, including those with autism or behavioural difficulties. You’ll be resilient, and not easily shocked. Some of the children in the Riggs Unit present challenging and complex behaviours, so being able to maintain an inner calm and confidence is essential. A balanced approach to difficulties using both nurture and structure is employed in Riggs, and we would like an individual who can get on board with this.
As a member of support staff at Malmesbury Park Primary School, you’ll be working in a team of like-minded individuals who all want the best for the learners in our school. You’ll have a positive sense of self, and always be willing to listen to and act on advice.
