What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Careers Lead to join our team at The Saint John Henry Newman School.This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop a high-quality, inclusive careers education programme that inspires ambition and prepares students for life beyond school. Working closely with the Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral & Life Skills), you will be responsible for delivering impartial information, advice and guidance (IAG), embedding employability across the curriculum, and ensuring every student has access to meaningful careers experiences. Experience in careers education and a Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development (or equivalent) are essential. The Careers Lead will ensure the school’s careers strategy is inclusive, forward-looking, and impactful for all learners at every stage of their educational journey.

  • Provide impartial 1:1 and group careers guidance tailored to individual student needs and aspirations.
  • Prioritise support for students with additional needs, including those who are disadvantaged (PP), have SEND, or are Looked After (LAC).
  • Support students in creating action plans and tracking progress toward career goals.
  • Monitor and contribute to the analysis of student destination data to improve outcomes and inform programme development.
  • Support students and tutors in logging career activities and building competencies on Unifrog.

Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers

  • Collaborate with curriculum leaders to ensure subject-specific career links are clearly communicated to pupils.
  • Support staff in identifying opportunities to embed career learning into schemes of work and classroom delivery.

Encounters with Employers and Employees

  • Organise and lead a diverse programme of employer engagement activities, including alumni events, careers fairs, and guest speaker visits.
  • Provide structured support for Years 10–13 students to develop CVs, personal statements, and applications using Unifrog.

Experiences of Workplaces

  • Coordinate and track meaningful work-related experiences, including Year 10 work experience placements and workplace visits across key stages.

Encounters with Further and Higher Education

  • Plan and lead visits to universities, colleges, and training providers to promote a wide range of post-16 and post-18 options.
  • Work with key staff to support students applying to competitive university courses and high-level apprenticeships.
  • Promote and facilitate access to post-16 and post-18 pathway tools within Unifrog.

Personal Guidance

  • Deliver high-quality careers guidance to individuals and groups, prioritising students at risk of becoming NEET.
  • Maintain accurate records of guidance sessions and follow-up support.
  • Ensure that students receive appropriate support at key transition points (KS3 options, post-16, post-18)

The Saint John Henry Newman School is a popular 11-18 mixed Catholic comprehensive school in Stevenage, and is a member of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust. The school serves the Catholic community across north Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and as far south as Hatfield, with pupils from more than 25 different parishes. It has an excellent reputation; it is heavily oversubscribed and there are continuing interest lists for all year groups. The roll is currently approximately1600, including 400 in the Sixth Form. The school has benefitted from considerable investment in its buildings, including a new £3.5 million Sports and Performing block (The Pavilion) and a substantial new build programme to replace our main building and Art block.

Since its foundation in 1987, the school has developed a reputation for excellent educational standards combined with unique opportunities to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. This academic success has been acknowledged by the Department for Education, who have written to the school and acknowledged its excellent performance, commenting that The Saint John Henry Newman School is one of the top 90 schools in the country on one measure and in the top 100 schools in the country on another measure. In 2021/22 the students achieved:

38% of all GCSE grades achieved were 9-7

68% A Level at A*, A and B:

The Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School sees the quality of interpersonal relationships as the most significant factor in the provision of an outstanding education.
