Be part of something bigger

At Byron Wood Academy, we believe every child deserves an exceptional education and a safe, inspiring place in which to learn. Situated in the heart of Sheffield, our academy serves a diverse and vibrant community where ambition, inclusion and opportunity are at the centre of everything we do.

We are looking to appoint a dedicated and reliable Caretaker to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys a varied, hands-on role and takes pride in maintaining high standards across a busy school environment. Working closely with the Operations Manager, you will play a vital role in ensuring our buildings, grounds and facilities remain safe, secure and welcoming for pupils, staff and visitors.

This is a full time role, 37hrs per week, 52 weeks per year. Working hours are 7am-3pm Monday to Thursday and 7am-2:30pm on Friday.

Key Responsibilities

As our Caretaker, you will:

  • Maintain the safety, cleanliness and presentation of the school buildings and grounds, carrying out routine inspections and repairs as required.
  • Hold keyholder responsibilities, including unlocking and securing the site, operating alarms and responding to security incidents when necessary.
  • Carry out general maintenance tasks, including basic plumbing, joinery, decorating and minor repairs.
  • Support the academy's compliance with statutory requirements, including fire safety checks, emergency lighting inspections and Legionella control procedures.
  • Keep external areas clean, safe and accessible, including litter collection, leaf clearance, gritting and snow removal during adverse weather.
  • Liaise with contractors and support site-based works, reporting any concerns and ensuring work is completed to a satisfactory standard.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies such as flooding, vandalism or break-ins, helping to make areas safe and reporting issues appropriately.
  • Assist with the movement, collection and procurement of equipment, materials and supplies required for the effective operation of the school.
What We're Looking For

We are seeking someone who:

  • Has experience of caretaking, site maintenance, facilities management or a similar hands-on role.
  • Possesses practical maintenance skills and can confidently undertake a range of basic repairs.
  • Understands the importance of health, safety and security within a school or public setting.
  • Takes a proactive approach and can work independently to identify and resolve issues.
  • Has excellent organisational skills and can prioritise a varied workload effectively.
  • Demonstrates reliability, flexibility and a strong commitment to maintaining high standards.
  • Communicates well with colleagues, contractors and visitors.
  • Holds, or is willing to obtain, the relevant licence and training required to drive a school minibus.
Why Join Us?

At Byron Wood Academy, you'll become part of a supportive team committed to making a real difference for children and young people. We offer a welcoming working environment, opportunities for professional development and the chance to play a key role in the daily life of our academy community.
