What skills and experience we're looking for

Following the promotion of the current post holder to the headship at a local school, Brook Street Primary School is looking to appoint a dedicated, passionate, knowledgeable and highly effective primary practitioner and school leader to join the school in January 2027 as Deputy Headteacher.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to join our popular and well-regarded school and to take the next step in their career. This is a vital role within the school and the successful candidate will be able to make a significant contribution towards the strategic direction of the school over the coming years. They will also be able to contribute towards the growth and development of colleagues, impact directly on outcomes for all pupils in all year groups and develop their own knowledge and skills to propel them into headship should they wish.

Specific responsibilities can be tailored to the strengths of the successful candidate but the current post holder is a DDSL, writing and pupil premium lead, ECT and apprenticeship mentor, leads on behaviour and contributes to the development of teaching and learning. This role also has a teaching commitment of up to 0.5FTE that varies to meet the needs of the school. Currently this involves teaching in LKS2 for 2 days per week.

We are looking for somebody who can work alongside and support the Headteacher and champion the best interests of all children at our school. This is an exciting time to join Brook Street as we look forward to responding to the AFIs in our recent Ofsted inspection, continuing to develop our bespoke SEND provision, implementing the new National Curriculum and establishing a new vision for the school over the next five years.

The successful candidate should:

  • Be a strong, effective and engaging classroom practitioner with experience across the primary phase.
  • Have a proven record of securing good outcomes for pupils within their own classroom and across the school
  • Have a deep understanding of teaching and learning and be able to develop these skills in others
  • Be a strategic thinker with experience of whole school development
  • Be able to lead and inspire colleagues
  • Be an excellent communicator who can treat people with empathy and understanding
  • Have high levels of integrity, honesty and personal responsibility
  • Believe in the transformational power of education

What the school offers its staff

Situated in South Carlisle, we serve a uniquely diverse community. Over 30 different home languages are spoken by our families and our children all have different starting points. However, they are also the best thing about our school and help to make it such a special place to work, teach and learn.

We have an excellent team of teachers, teaching assistants and wider support staff and are committed to giving all of them opportunities for professional development as well as supporting their work-life balance and well-being.

We maintain a strong focus on core foundational skills but also ensure children get opportunities to develop artistically and creatively, access and enjoy the outdoors through a bespoke curriculum offer and get opportunities to develop their confidence and support their personal development. Visitors to the school complement the children on their excellent behaviour and the calm and productive atmosphere around school. When out and about our pupils are consistently praised for their conduct and politeness.

The Great Border City of Carlisle is perfectly situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park and has excellent transport links to Scotland, Newcastle and Manchester, Birmingham and London via the West Coast Mainline. Carlisle also boasts a rich history and is about to start a new period of growth with the development of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and the expansion of the University of Cumbria. Cumbria is a fantastic place to live and work with almost unlimited opportunities for those who love the outdoors and some beautiful market towns such as Keswick, Penrith and Kendal to explore.

Brook Street School has been judged as a consistently good school since 2012 and we continue to grow and develop together. We have also just had a very recent and successful Ofsted inspection in April 2026. Our children are hard-working, well-behaved and polite. They love to learn and take every opportunity that we offer them. Our staff team are dedicated, supportive and hard-working professionals who embrace opportunities for professional development. This is an excellent opportunity to join a team who work together in the best interests of the children and support each other.
