Governance Professional job summary

Effective governance provides strategic direction and robust accountability for the Great Learners Trust (GLT) and its schools. The Governance Professional is central to governance effectiveness, compliance, and innovation within the trust, supporting trustees and local governing boards to deliver on core strategic functions.

As the Great Learners Trust enters an exciting phase of development, this role offers a unique opportunity to lead and shape our trust-wide governance model. With changes in technology and evolving governance practices, we are looking for someone who will drive innovation, embed strong systems, and ensure our governance is both future-facing and highly effective. Guided by our values—Be Brave, Be Bold, Be Ambitious—the successful candidate will help create a governance framework that not only meets today’s challenges but also anticipates and adapts to tomorrow’s opportunities.

The Governance Professional oversees all aspects of governance and will:

Advise Trustees, Members and Local Governing Boards on governance, constitutional and procedural matters.

Provide effective administration and organisational support to the trust board and its committees.

Provide guidance to ensure that the trust is properly constituted and is compliant with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework and understands the potential consequences for noncompliance.

Manage information effectively in accordance with legal requirements.

Provide strategic leadership in developing and modernising our trust-wide governance model, embracing innovation and technology to ensure governance is bold, ambitious, and fit for the future.

The Governance Professional must carry out their duties in line with the seven principles of public life (Nolan principles). They should also be mindful of their responsibilities under equality legislation, recognising and encouraging diversity and inclusion.
