Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary

Hawkchurch Primary School are seeking a confident and adaptable HLTA to join our team, delivering high-quality learning experiences across the school. This role involves supervising whole classes during teacher absence and delivering lessons, pupil interventions and PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) cover.


This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience of working with children—particularly at whole-class level—who is looking to develop their teaching practice in a supportive environment. This would be a great stepping stone into teaching - develop your skills, gain classroom experience and grow with us.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver lessons to groups and/or whole classes as required
  • Ensure a positive and purposeful learning environment is maintained
  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with school policies
  • Support pupils to engage with learning and complete set work
  • Provide feedback to teaching staff on pupil progress and engagement
  • Be flexible and adaptable across different year groups and subjects

  • Who We’re Looking For

  • Have experience with whole-class delivery
  • Are confident managing a classroom independently
  • Have strong communication and behaviour management skills
  • Are enthusiastic, reliable, and committed to supporting pupil learning

  • Are an experienced TA/HLTA who is confident managing a classroom independently.
  • Have completed a teacher training course but do not yet feel ready to take on full class responsibility
  • Are looking to build confidence and experience before moving into a teaching role
