Intervention Tutor job summary

Help students close the gaps, build confidence and achieve their potential.

Are you passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed?

Townsend Church of England School is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Intervention Tutor to provide high-quality, targeted academic support for students who need additional help with literacy, numeracy and foundational learning skills.

This is a flexible role designed to attract the strongest candidate. We welcome applications from people with a teaching, tutoring, intervention or wider educational background, and the precise responsibilities and salary will reflect the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The Role

Working primarily with individual students and small groups, you will deliver carefully planned and focused interventions that respond to identified areas of need. You will work closely with teaching staff, SEND/Inclusion colleagues and senior leaders to ensure that intervention complements classroom teaching and has a measurable impact on students’ progress.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Deliver high-quality interventions to individuals and small groups.
  • Plan focused sessions to address gaps in knowledge, understanding and skills.
  • Adapt teaching and resources to meet different starting points and individual needs.
  • Support the development of literacy, numeracy and study skills.
  • Monitor and assess students’ progress and maintain accurate records.
  • Build students’ confidence, resilience, independence and motivation.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching, SEND/Inclusion and pastoral colleagues.
  • Help support a coordinated whole-school approach to closing attainment gaps and improving student outcomes.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has strong literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Has experience of working effectively with children or young people in an educational or learning environment.
  • Can explain concepts clearly and adapt support to meet learners’ needs.
  • Can establish positive and professional relationships with students.
  • Is organised, reliable and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Has high expectations and is committed to helping young people achieve their potential.
  • Is patient, positive, resilient and encouraging.
  • Is committed to equality, inclusion and safeguarding.

Qualified Teacher Status is desirable but not essential, and relevant teaching, tutoring, SEND, literacy, numeracy or intervention qualifications and experience would also be welcomed.
