What skills and experience we're looking for

Do you love helping pupils discover the moments that make learning “click”?

At Ferndown Middle School, those moments happen every day – sometimes in a lively discussion about medieval medicine, sometimes when a student crafts a beautifully judged paragraph, and sometimes when a quiet pupil finds the confidence to share their ideas with the class.

We’re looking for a teacher who brings curiosity, warmth and high expectations to their classroom; someone who can inspire pupils in both English and History and help them grow into confident, independent learners.

What you’ll do:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, ambitious KS3 English and History lessons that spark curiosity and build strong core knowledge.
  • Create a positive, well‑structured learning environment where pupils feel valued, motivated and ready to take on new challenges.
  • Use assessment thoughtfully to identify strengths, address misconceptions and guide pupils to achieve their best.
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with pupils, families and colleagues so that everyone feels part of a supportive learning community.
  • Work closely with the English and Humanities teams to shape curriculum thinking, share great practice and continually refine what we offer.
  • Contribute to the wider life of our school through enrichment, trips, clubs or pastoral support, helping every child feel part of something special.

Who you are:

  • Qualified (QTS) and confident in teaching both English and History at KS3 level.
  • Passionate about the KS3 curriculum and enthusiastic about helping pupils stretch their thinking and develop strong core skills.
  • Skilled at meeting mixed‑ability needs through clear explanations, thoughtful scaffolding and meaningful challenge.
  • Warm, approachable and child‑centred – someone who values relationships and knows how confidence and independence grow.
  • Organised, reflective and committed to creating engaging, purposeful lessons every day.
  • A team player who enjoys collaboration, open communication and contributing to shared success.
  • Open‑minded, creative and committed to continuing professional development.
