What skills and experience we're looking for
Skills
- Strong communication skills (verbal and non-verbal), especially with children who have additional needs
- Patience, empathy, and a calm, supportive approach
- Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils, staff, and parents
- Adaptability and flexibility to respond to individual learning needs
- Behaviour management skills, including de-escalation techniques
- Good observation and assessment skills to track pupil progress
- Teamwork and collaboration with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
- Creativity in adapting learning materials and activities
- Basic literacy and numeracy support skills
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
Experience
- Supporting children with SEN such as autism (ASD), ADHD, speech and language needs, or learning difficulties
- Working 1:1 or with small groups to support learning and development
- Assisting in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or EHCP targets
- Supporting emotional regulation and social skills development
- Helping manage classroom behaviour and promote positive learning environments
- Assisting with personal care needs where required
- Working alongside teachers to plan and deliver differentiated activities
- Experience liaising with parents, carers, and external professionals
- Observing and recording pupil progress and behaviour
