What skills and experience we're looking for

Skills

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and non-verbal), especially with children who have additional needs
  • Patience, empathy, and a calm, supportive approach
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils, staff, and parents
  • Adaptability and flexibility to respond to individual learning needs
  • Behaviour management skills, including de-escalation techniques
  • Good observation and assessment skills to track pupil progress
  • Teamwork and collaboration with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
  • Creativity in adapting learning materials and activities
  • Basic literacy and numeracy support skills
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures

Experience

  • Supporting children with SEN such as autism (ASD), ADHD, speech and language needs, or learning difficulties
  • Working 1:1 or with small groups to support learning and development
  • Assisting in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or EHCP targets
  • Supporting emotional regulation and social skills development
  • Helping manage classroom behaviour and promote positive learning environments
  • Assisting with personal care needs where required
  • Working alongside teachers to plan and deliver differentiated activities
  • Experience liaising with parents, carers, and external professionals
  • Observing and recording pupil progress and behaviour
