What skills and experience we're looking for

  • Managing, monitoring performance and supervising the Science technicians
  • Responsible for the day to day running of the preparation rooms including ensuring that all equipment is clean
  • Provide technical support to experienced and trainee teachers including guidance on health and safety
  • Keeping up to date with health and safety requirements
  • Carrying out health and safety checks on laboratories, prep room and stores. Carrying out safety checks on equipment and chemicals that deteriorate
  • Operating an efficient system for stocking, storing, transporting and distributing all equipment and resources used in the science department to and from lessons including the upkeep of the stock database.
  • Provide technical support to students including health and safety guidance especially regarding ‘A’ level courses
  • Responsible for resources for ‘A’ level exam and coursework; making sure that all chemicals and equipment are ordered and available, including making up solutions required
  • Responsible for resourcing new schemes of work in all three sciences
  • Demonstrating the use of equipment to teaching staff and students
  • Placing orders for equipment, chemicals and checking invoices against deliveries
  • Keeping financial records, including obtaining materials by local purchase and keeping a record of purchases. Assisting Head of Science during the budget bidding process.
  • Organising technical support to the science department
  • Carrying out risk assessments for activities carried out by technicians
  • Training and arranging of the training for colleagues
  • Preparing resources, setting up equipment and experiments and ensuring correct procedures are followed on their manufacture/storage/disposal
  • Keeping up to date with developments in practical science.
  • Attending open evenings, faculty meetings and other department events as requested.
  • Assist in the administration and distribution of cover work for absent teaching staff.
  • Network and maintain communication channels between suppliers and other science technicians outside the school to ensure best value is achieved and best practice is ensured.
