Trust Local Governance Committee Clerk job summary
Trust Governance Clerk -Local Governing Committees
Newman Catholic Trust
Grade: N6 (BG8)
Contract: Permanent, annualised hours
Hours: Up to approximately 292 hours per year, depending on the agreed portfolio
Location: Trust-wide, with hybrid and remote working available
Newman Catholic Trust is seeking to appoint one or more highly organised and dependable Governance Clerks to provide professional support to the Local Governing Committees of our schools.
We currently have four Local Governing Committees available. This offers considerable flexibility. Depending on experience, availability, and preferences, one successful candidate could oversee the full portfolio, or we may appoint several clerks, each supporting a smaller number of schools.
The role could therefore suit an experienced governance professional seeking a substantial flexible position or someone looking to combine governance work with other professional or personal commitments.
This is a Trust-employed role, centrally coordinated by the Lead Governance Professional. Much of the meeting preparation, administration and minute writing can be completed remotely, with attendance at online or school-based meetings as agreed. Most scheduled Local Governing Committee meetings take place during the evening.
The successful candidate will:
coordinate meeting dates, agendas, papers and associated administration
attend meetings and produce accurate, concise and professional minutes
provide procedural and governance advice to Chairs and governors
maintain governance records, action logs and statutory information
support governor recruitment, induction and development
work closely with LGC Chairs, Principals and the Lead Governance Professional
We are looking for someone with excellent written communication, strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail. The successful candidate will be able to work independently, manage confidential information appropriately and build positive professional relationships with governors and school leaders.
Previous experience of clerking, governance or high-level administrative support would be advantageous. Training, professional development and support through the Trust Clerks’ Forum will be provided.
The postholder will be expected to support and uphold the Catholic mission, values and ethos of the Trust and its schools. Applicants do not need to be Catholic.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing Trust, become part of a supportive governance team and shape a flexible role around an agreed number of schools and meetings.
Applicants should indicate within their application whether they would prefer to support some or all of the four available Local Governing Committees and confirm their availability for scheduled evening meetings.
The final contracted hours and actual salary will be determined by the number of Local Governing Committees allocated. Additional authorised panels or exceptional meetings will be paid in accordance with the postholder’s contract.
Safeguarding
Newman Catholic Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff, governors and volunteers to share this commitment.
The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and other appropriate pre-employment checks, including satisfactory references. In accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education, an online search will be undertaken for shortlisted candidates as part of the Trust’s due diligence and safer recruitment procedures.
Newman Catholic Trust is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates from all backgrounds.
